Living in Salamanca

.Just as Salamanca a great city to visit for its historical and artistic heritage, it is also a wonderful place to call home and to be able to get more out of ones life.  Salamanca has many advantages including a lower cost of living, a close proximity to everyday necessities, ability to live with a low carbon footprint, easy access to a wide variety of physical activities as well as a number of options for cultural events.

Most of the city is accessible on foot and when you are inclined to pick up the keys and drive, it is rarely more than five minutes to your destination.  Generally within a few blocks of most residences, there are a handful of supermercados, farmacias, panaderías, fruterías, and most other shops of need.  In fact, the grocery stores are so close that its very easy to eat fresh produce daily.

The cost of living in Salamanca is much less than the larger cities in Spain.  Renting an apartment in Madrid or Barcelona averages 72% more per month with the average 2 bedroom in Salamanca costing €465 vs. €920 and €925 in Madrid and Barcelona respectively.  Most other monthly expenses are also less in Salamanca, averaging 28% less than Madrid and Barcelona.

Life is easier in Salamanca.  Medical care, shopping stores and places to eat are a few steps away.  Salamanca is no different than most Spanish towns as there are many churches; at least 30 within a 5 minute drive of the center and most of those are walkable.  Once you arrive in Salamanca, you will notice all Salmantinos out and about running their errands.  It is a vibrant city, full of life.

If you enjoy outdoor activities, Salamanca has much to offer.  There are many parks found in the neighborhoods surrounding the city.  You are even able take out a canoe or a rowing boat along the Rio Tormes and enjoying stunning views of the city.  If you like archery, then Salas Bajas is for you.  For those who like to go cycling, you can ride along the bike lanes by the River Park and under the Eiffel iron bridge until you pass the Old Flour Mill and the Roman bridge.  There are also several cycling groups around the city with most leaving for rides Sunday morning at 9AM.

A number of companies are dedicated to adventure tourism: visits to bull farms, bungee-jumping, paintball, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, are all possible.  Golf lovers have three high quality courses ten minutes from the city center.
